Properly Cutting Crown Molding Angles, The Long Run

When it comes to the how to of crown molding, we at Cut N Crown have been the running experts now for over 12 years. Not only is our crown molding jig hands down the best system for cutting crown molding but we have been educating woodworkers beyond just our tools. We teach you many how to crown molding techniques on our youtube page that show how you can take on certain aspects of your crown moulding job beyond the simple 90 degree straight corner. Join us in this small tutorial on long runs with crown molding using splices and scarf joints. Remember while this may be elementary to you it is actually something new and unused by our newer crown molding amateurs. We all remember when we first started out do we not?

Remember what Sheldon is talking about here can be applied to any crown molding installation just listen to what he says. Of course he is using his tool to teach it but what you have to know is the proper way to join those crown moulding long runs. Cutting the crown molding angle is the most important long run joint you can have and it is important to for beginners to know how to do it properly, with or without a crown molding jig. Too many times have we been down to a new friends home and noticed that his crown molding butts straight up to the next run, we always hope for his sake that it was like that before he bought the house but are hesitant to ask. You do not want to be that rude house guest or a crown molding snob...

Coping Crown Molding Takes Too Much Time

So Imagine that every thing you did in your life was done the hard way. Picture it with me. Hmmm lets think what is easy in your life but you would prefer to make it hard. How about dialing the phone. When you push a button on your phone it goes beep and dials immediately. How about we go back to the old rotary dial. Press your finger into the slot for the nine and slowly roll the dial around and make sure you go all the way otherwise your phone may think it was an eight and after rolling out ten of those dials and taking about a minute, oh darn dialed the wrong number let's start over again. That... would be a huge waste of time. Here is another one. Let us remove your dish washer. We have a dishwasher, as do most homes that have seen a renovation in the last 25 years. Funny thing is though I still watch my mom washing dishes when she visits. I laugh because while she spends a half hour prepping, running water, scrubbing, rinsing, drying and putting away those dishes, I spend about two minutes loading and about 1 minute unloading the beloved dishwasher.

Fresh Cut and being help up to show you how perfect crown molding is using Cut N Crown
"It is just the way I like to do it" she will say. Listen if it is comforting to waste time and hence money, then please do keep your creature comforts, but do you mind if we try and move on to learning new things and improving how we do old things.

That was a great segway to what is on our minds today here at Cut-N-Crown. As most of you know we are crown molding people. Many years ago we were simple crown molding creating and installing crown molding what was thought of the "simple way". Though if you remember all of those years ago crown molding was anything but simple. Complicatedly simple, right? "complicatedly" We love making up our own words, or is that a word on its own, not sure, probably does not matter(back to Crown Molding now).

Crown molding was hard and it was only after many years and much experience were we extraordinarily good at it. Our clients would say great. It was unexceptable though how much room for error was involved in the process and how hard it was to teach the people who worked for us. So we made the steps to make crown molding simple. Not the complicated version of simple but the truly relentlessly simple. Not sure if the relentlessly description needed to be there, but it is and we like the sound of it. We like relentlessly because we worked very hard to ensure that every step of the way the new how to crown molding was going to be error free and simple. Those keywords turn into time savings and time savings turns into money savings and we do that over and over for you, every time you pull out our jig.

Our system was so great that every one now has their own version of it. We promise they are lesser versions, we are the original and the best. The other mock ups of us had to work around our patented design and in doing so created cheap versions that have movements that you do want when striving for perfection. Another thing, if you have a question on that subject please immediately call us and we will tell you why. No Seriously Call, our number is on the first page of our website, we encourage the call and have the knowledge to give you true support.

Coping Cuts For Crown Moulding

Something else our crown molding jigs did. They did to crown molding what the touch tone did to dialing a phone. Our crown molding tools did to crown molding what the dishwasher did to washing dishes. They saved time by eliminating potential headaches. One of those time savers was eliminating that tedious task of coping your crown molding. It eliminated the need to even bother having to buy another tool or some other invention that makes coping easier. Yea, yet another sub tool in your already over run plethora of tools, a tool to help your tool that helps your tool. Come on, let us just eliminate the need. With the measurement of the Mite-r-Gauge and then the perfect cuts made by our crown molding jigs a coping cut on the inside corner of any crown molding is a waste of time. If the other argument of settling is your reasoning for using the cope cut on crown molding do what we do, an instant glue or even a wood glue. You own that already and the instant glue works in seconds to create a true bond.

If you are a purist and find comfort in the cope, then by all means, please continue to cope and do not think we are picking on you. That is not our intention. Our intention is to make your life easy. Enjoy it and have fun, don't be frustrated and waste it. We want to make the project(and your life) go as smooth as possible.

Amateur Cabinet Maker & Crown Molding Installer

This is a story of an amateur crown molding installer, we also will add it is the story of his first cabinets too. Please take a look:
It is a pretty simple layout, nice, but simple. Obviously, as we are crown molding folks, these cabinets are missing something. Where is the crown molding? Well it turns out that these cabinets went without crown molding for about 6 months all due to a disagreement on the type of crown molding that was to go on them. We all know where these disagreements begin when you are a do it yourselfer. That is right, it comes from the contractor(husbands) and the client(Wives). This was no different as this fine amateur woodworker told us the couple came to an impasse on what style they wanted to line the top of their cabinets and he went on strike. The next bit of information is something else we woodworking types know well. The contractor never wins the strike nor is the compromise rarely ever in the favor of the husband. Experience teaches us that. Well in the end the purchase was made, a nice 3 plus inch crown on a 45 degree spring angle. It was stained and finished exactly as the cabinets had been and it turned out quite nice.

Learn How to Install Crown Molding On Protruding Cabinet Sides-

Not too many crazy angles on the install so he felt it would be simple enough. But what he didn't realize is that 1/8 inch lip on the edges of his cabinets with not allow his crown molding to run smooth on the sides of his cabinets. I will stop right here and ask every one reading this, how would you have handled that situation? I should create a poll to find out the answers. Can you tell by the next picture how he moved forward on the cabinet crown?
Yea, he placed it on top of the cabinet. Good job recognizing that. He was upset with himself though because he felt he did it all wrong as the flash on this picture shows, it is not perfect. The little bit of gap he has can be frustrating for this type of crown molding install. Most likely what he did here was did not set up his backer blocks properly behind this crown molding. Catch up with us next time as we take a further look at this project and if you want to be able to install crown molding yourself please visit our website and in minutes with our jig, we will have you installing crown perfect!

Crown molding angles, simplified.

We were thinking about going digital when it comes to crown molding and measuring your angles in order to install crown molding. What do you think? If you take a look at this beauty here in the picture it is the prime candidate to add to our crown molding system. The difference really is the ease of the read. Our current model is extremely sufficient. Measures well and has the necessary accuracy you would need for any crown moulding install. I like it. If a complaint could ever arise though, I would foresee it having to do with reading exactly what angle is that has just been measured for eyes not great at the close up read. Enter The digital read out screen of this crown molding angle finder. Yep, that is nice. A digital number looking you right in the eye. Not revolutionary but nice. For those of you who are not sure where this tool even fits into the equation of installing crown molding, just know that in order to understand what angle you set your miter saw when cutting crown molding corners you have to know what the angle of the corner is. That is where this angle finder comes in, you simply set it up to each adjacent wall and there you have it, your corner angle. With our system you then divide that number in half, set your miter saw to that number, set your crown molding on my jig and make the cut! The beginning of a perfect crown molding install. More can be learned at our site cutncrown.com. But back to the digital angle finder option. Please tell us what you think, go to cutncrown.com and let us know your opinion. You can also email us direct from our cutncrown.com site at info@cutncrown.com. I would like to see it added to the arsenal of great weapons we have to install crown molding perfect but it is you that always matters. So drop a line and let us know.
